When I started The Cookie Buzz, it was just one of those things where you kind of say “why not?” I learned to cook from my dad and as I grew older I was fascinated by what I saw on the Food Network. The shows that I really enjoyed most were the baking shows which mainly involved cakes and pastries. At that point, sugar cookies weren’t even on my radar.
So why sugar cookies? I became intrigued by the beautiful decorations I was seeing both by local cookiers and those who were posting online. I had tried baking sugar cookies in the past but was never quite content with the flavor. I knew I needed to get that right first.
I do not have a background in design or culinary arts. I’m just a teacher and a mom that believed I could figure this thing out. We spent three months working on our recipes and taste tests. My family sacrificed themselves by eating all of my experiments. I finally settled on a recipe that the family agreed upon. We hope we succeeded.
Whereas the recipes took three months, the decorating is a work in progress. Probably the best advice I got was from my daughter, my design consultant, that everything is just dots and lines. Something about that just rang true. It simplified what I was trying to do. This part of the journey continues and I learn new things every time I have a client.
My favorite part of doing this is watching the reactions of clients when they see their cookies for the first time. It almost convinces me to do this for free. Almost.
